From the gas storage facility About the Monument
Visible from afar, the gasometer dominates the skyline of Pforzheim’s Oststadt district. Built in 1912 as a regulating tank for the city’s gas supply, it served as a source of energy for the city for nearly 100 years and is now one of the last remaining bell-shaped gas tanks in the state.
A New Lease on Life for the Gas Boiler
Working closely with historic preservation authorities, the decommissioned gas boiler was transformed into a modern event and exhibition venue with a floor area of nearly 1,500 m² and a volume of 60,000 m³—without losing its industrial character. Today, the carefully restored historic building houses the monumental panoramic artworks of Yadegar Asisi while also serving as a reminder of the era of industrialization.

of the panorama at the western entrance to Konstanz will be a special experience for everyone, every day. Whether heading toward Switzerland, into the city center, or to the island of Reichenau, the folded surface of this imposing structure will reveal different color combinations along the way, giving the city a distinctive landmark visible even from a distance. Its bold exterior contrasts with an immersive spatial experience inside. You'll feel it the moment you first see the building and step inside!

From the ground floor, visitors enter a spacious foyer with a café, museum shop, and an initial exhibition area featuring supplementary material on the theme of the panoramic image. Above this, a cylindrical exhibition space more than 30 meters high opens up, entirely dedicated to the historical city panorama designed by Yadegar Asisi. In the center of the room stands an observation tower approximately 16 meters high, offering guests a wide variety of vantage points from which to view the panorama. The structure is complemented by an observation tower and a rooftop terrace with a restaurant, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of Konstanz, Lake Constance, and all the way to the Alps.
- Lina Lahiri Project Manager and Partner,
Sauerbruch Hutton
"The building is an impressive feat of engineering, standing 52 meters tall with a column-free span of 30 meters inside. Its design creates three extraordinary panoramic spaces: first, the artwork "The Council of Constance"; second, the kinetic façade, which lends the structure a lively dynamism; and finally, the fascinating panoramic view of the city of Constance, Lake Constance, and the islands in the Rhine. This unique combination of art, history, engineering, architecture, and landscape makes the building a truly special experience."

Exterior facade of the Panorama

The building envelope of Panorama Konstanz consists of two layers: on the inside, a wood-frame structure with infill panels forms the thermally effective envelope. In front of this, expanded metal elements in various colors are mounted on a steel substructure. Their varying angles create a three-dimensional pleated effect that appears in shifting shades of blue and red depending on the viewing angle-this gives the façade its dynamic appearance, which changes with every step.

The principle of kinetic polychromy.

The design of the Panorama Konstanz responds to its unique location through the principle of kinetic polychromy. The geometry and color scheme of the facade create the illusion that the building is in motion, so that passersby experience it as a dynamic, ever-changing object depending on their position and speed.

Structure and Architecture

The renowned architectural firm sauerbruch hutton designed a new, vibrant landmark at the entrance to the city of Konstanz. of the panorama at the western entrance to Konstanz will be a special experience for everyone, every day. Whether heading toward Switzerland, into the city center, or to the island of Reichenau, the folded surface of this imposing structure will reveal different color combinations along the way, giving the city a distinctive landmark visible even from a distance. I am very pleased that we have succeeded in creating such an unusual and joyful monument in Konstanz-all the more so because I was born and raised here."

The Architecture

The Panorama Konstanz combines extraordinary architecture with innovative timber construction.

 Panorama of Konstanz
Innovative Wood Construction

The Panorama Konstanz sets new standards in modern timber construction.
